Dystopia was composed by French-American composer Gary Arthur Piatt, whose credits include music in the television series The Secret History of the White House, Hunting Hitler, Vice, The Today Show, American Race, Dateline, 20/20 and numerous production music albums including 101M033 Urban Drama and 101M038 Massive Impact for 101 Music, both released in 2018.

“When Art Phillips, owner, director and executive producer of 101 Music, and I began discussing the direction for this album project, we decided to push the boundaries a bit and provide an unconventional twist to cinematic trailer music by exploring unforgiving and twisted sound design textures along with orchestral elements that would point to a post-apocalyptic audio-scape to suit stories of societal collapse, political upheaval and the devastation of humanity.

“The formula evolved after a few discussions where we decided to incorporate primal solo voices, messed-up choral ensembles with hybrid orchestral elements such as strings, brass and explosive cinematic percussion, sound design fx elements including deep fog horns, sub-bass falls, drones, synth risers, electronic synths and ethereal atmospheres.

“Once the tracks were complete we decided to go back in to add an earthy organic’ness to the production, where Phillips overdubbed live performance elements from real instruments that he played and recorded in his studio facility in Sydney Australia, then sent these elements back to me as individual tracks to re-mix into the existing production.  This enhanced the project nicely which included; the oud, 12-string acoustic guitars, various zithers (some performances being very percussive where a short metal bar from a triangle was tossed onto the zithers and close mic’d), mandolins, electric guitars, dobro acoustic slide guitar, didgeridoo, clap sticks, vocal chants, Tibetan singing bowls, Tibetan tingsha cymbals, triangles, tambourines, various sized shakers and ethnic hand drums.
