about the project
When I sat down to score this project I wanted to cater to all sorts of unsolved mystery type stories – from crime investigation, whodunnits, the supernatural, to the extra-terrestrial, otherworldly stories, to missing planes, ships, and the like. Creepy was an important initial keyword, as were bone-chilling, dark and spiritless.
I chose to use an orchestral palette of great keyboard samples with ominous electronic synths – and to engage one of the world’s best session musicians, Gina Kronstadt, from Los Angeles, to overdub solo violin, violin fx and ethereal female vocal acrobatics.
As Gina is based in LA, there was much pre-planning to occur in order to achieve an effective remote recording session between Sydney Australia and Los Angeles. This was achieved using ‘audiomovers / listento’ application and zoom visuals from my recording studio in Sydney to an LA studio, where Steve Shepherd, recording engineer, was at the controls. My local audio engineer, Kathy Naunton from dB Mastering (Australia), was also online to help ensure smoothness for the 8 hour recording session.

Gina is a super talent and a rare entity, who is as impressive with her vocal artistry and awesome textural sound as she is with the violin. It was a pleasure and such an honor to have Gina on this project for 101 Music.
