about the project

This album was written, arranged and produced by Art Phillips, who is a renowned screen music composer and owner and director of 101 Music Pty Ltd®  https://101.audio/bio-art-phillips/.

Art served as President of the Australian Guild of Screen Composers for over 7 years, and has scored a multitude of television series, films and documentaries which have received acclaimed music awards and nominations internationally, including 2 Emmy Awards and APRA Screen Music Awards. He is also renowned for his work as music composer and producer for over 60 production music albums for the major music libraries: FirstCom Music, Bruton, Chappell Recorded Music, Sonoton, 5Alarm and many more. Art established 101 Music Pty Ltd® 8 years ago and his company is now represented in some 85 territories across the globe, with over 60 album releases in his production music catalogue.

The concept and direction of this album release is focused on music for dramatic mystery, crime, detective, forensic and supernatural stories for use in cinematic film, television, reality, and ‘whodunit’ style documentaries.

In this 12 track album release, 6 of these titles are vocal songs with lyrics that are co-written by U.S.-based song lyricist Beverly Klingsick.

Bev and Art have been working together, co-writing successful songs, since the late 70s in Los Angeles. They continue to work together with Art in Sydney, Australia and Bev on the east coast of America.

Their song co-writes are completely unique and are ideal for use as television song themes, end title credits and / or featured music segments for dramatic script enhancement to propel stories.

Quote from co-writer / lyricist, Bev Klingsick:

‘My contributions to this project involve two separate categories: lyricist on 6 tracks, and co-creator of the album release metadata. Although the mechanics and execution of each job category are much different from one another, the primary purpose of both is the same – to effectively tell engaging stories. In the case of this project – the stories are cold, eerie, mysterious and spellbinding.

It all begins with Art sending me an mp3 demo of the music track, which is basically in its final form – just being unmixed and unmastered. I then listen to the music track numerous times to understand what the music is saying to me, as music does in fact talk!

The music will tell me what the track title should be – the most important starting point. I then proceed to make a list of words and phrases that describe the title as well as the overall feel of the music. I then analyze the sections, plotting out a beginning, a middle, and an end. Finally, I begin to create a story based on the dynamics and emotions of the music.

With this album project, 101M061 The Dark Side Vol. 2, I found the sound of each instrumental track to be unique and quite unusual (e.g. rhythm, structure, mood, instrumentation), with each track sounding completely different from every other track. It was as if I was given a box of jigsaw puzzle pieces for each song selection. I then had to fit the pieces together to reveal colours, textures, characters, emotions and events to create the lyrically dramatic stories that were begging to be told. This process for me is extraordinarily creative, and I find production (library) music to be a great vehicle for expression.

Art Phillips is such an incredible talent, and I am indebted to him for providing me with these amazing opportunities.’ (Klingsick 2021)
