about the project

‘After Dark’ is a project that Art Phillips, 101 Music Pty Ltd®, and I discussed at the Production Music Conference (PMC), a couple years ago.  The idea was to capture unsettled, tense, investigative and, at times, contemplative moods with compositions centered around a minimal yet modern jazz ensemble featuring acoustic piano, electric guitar, upright bass along with light percussion and hybrid textures.

I used Ableton Live to compose and record and then handed off to Art so that he could provide feedback, not to mention add his amazing electric guitar tracks!  It was truly a pleasure to combine my love of jazz, old noir films, modern crime shows and current production music techniques to this project.

Art’s encouragement, direction and guidance were enormously inspiring.

Jeff Bichaylo (March, 2022)

This is a special project for 101 Music, as it’s sophisticated, atmospheric, lightly dramatic and features a classy jazz quartet of acoustic piano, electric guitar, acoustic bass and keyboards.

Each track title has at least 10 track variations that work as stand-alone cues. These music cues are much more useful than providing instrument grouped ‘stems’, as the cues supply the most suitable variations that work emotionally and musically, are quite minimalist with great use of space, and are most effective for editors.

It’s an honor to have Jeff as a contributing composer to the 101 Music Pty Ltd® catalogue. Working with Jeff has been an absolute joy, as his musicality is superb, innovative and artistic.

Playing guitar on this project has been a real treat for me, using my father’s 1941 Gibson L-12 f-hole guitar, with a floating DeArmond pickup (circa 1950), and my Fender Princeton amp, modified by Paul Rivera in the late 70s.

Jeffrey Francis Bichaylo (Jeff Bichaylo) is a renowned musician and composer, a product of the Philadelphia music scene. Jeff has worked with Doc Gibbs, Jay & The Techniques, Bernie Worrell, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Jef Lee Johnson, and Dexter Wansel. Jeff has brought his performance and studio chops along with his jazz pedigree to bear in his compositions which pivot on eliciting captivating moods and supporting a visual experience.
